Respiratory Physiotherapy
Dysfunctional breathing—often referred to as Breathing Pattern Disorder (BPD)—is common and can significantly impact overall health and well-being. BPD frequently co-exists with neurological conditions as well as chronic conditions such as POTS, Long COVID, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).
BPD can contribute to a wide range of symptoms, including shortness of breath, hyperventilation, anxiety, muscle and joint discomfort, fatigue, and nervous system dysregulation (often associated with a heightened “fight or flight” or sympathetic state). Improving breathing patterns can have a meaningful impact on both physical and mental well-being.
There are also many types of lung diseases, which commonly present with symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are among the most well-known. Asthma, in particular, is the most common chronic disease in children, making early education around breathing and symptom management especially important.
Regardless of the underlying condition, learning to breathe more efficiently is a key component of symptom management. Developing self-awareness of your unique breathing pattern allows for more targeted and effective treatment. Therapy focuses on improving the efficiency, coordination, and ease of breathing, while also supporting optimal nervous system regulation and overall function.
